Piano, Strings, Drums Audition Guidelines

Introduction

Each student must state their name and the title of the piece they will perform at the beginning of each video.

Video Requirements

 Students must submit at least two compositions of contrasting styles, such as:

1. Classical Repertoire

  • A 2-5 minute clip of the student performing a piece from the standard classical repertoire (see suggested literature below).

2. Group Performance

  • A 2-5 minute clip of the student performing a song with a group. This can include, but is not limited to, a group recital, orchestra, ensemble, worship band, choir, or choral group. This could be a recording from a church service or a group assembled specifically for this video audition.

3. Contemporary Piece

  • A 2-5 minute clip of the student performing a contemporary worship, jazz, or commercial piece. The student may use additional accompanying tracks of other instruments or vocals to enhance the performance.

4. Original or Self-Arranged Piece

  • A 2-5 minute clip of the student performing a self-written or self-arranged piece of music.

Suggested Literature for Piano Applied Students

  • A Bach Prelude and Fugue, or a Scarlatti Sonata.
  • A classical sonata by composers like Mozart or Beethoven.
  • A composition from the Romantic, Impressionistic, or Modern periods such as a Chopin Nocturne, Brahms Intermezzo, Debussy Arabesque, etc.

Suggested Rudiments and Grooves for Drums Applied Studies

  • Rudiment: Long Rolls
  • Rudiment: Flams
  • Rudiment: Paradiddle
  • Groove: Rock
  • Groove: Funk
  • Groove: 6/8

Submission Method

  • Upload the videos to Google Drive or Youtube.
  • Enable access to the videos.
  • Share the link on the information form provided.

These videos will be reviewed by the department, and students may be asked to perform an in-person interview and audition with the Program Coordinator and other Music and Worship Department faculty before starting their degree at Boyce College.
